Looking Back at a Transformative Gathering: A Recap of Nature & Circularity Week 2025

In 2025, the sustainability community came together for the incredible Nature & Circularity Week 2025. Held on October 22 and 23, 2025, the inspiring two-day event took place at The Sustainability Institute in Stellenbosch, South Africa. It was a monumental gathering that challenged attendees to deeply rethink their relationship with the natural world and to build a regenerative economy.

The Impact in Numbers

The event achieved massive engagement, boasting 250 registrations and creating valuable connections for 109 matchmaking participants. Throughout the event, attendees had the opportunity to explore 20 expo stands, attend 3 plenary sessions, and participate in 3 immersive field trips. This dynamic space for social innovation was made possible through proud collaborations with partners including the African Circular Economy Network (ACEN), TheRockGroup, Bergplaas Nature Reserve, and Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB) Kenya.

Day 1: Human (In) Nature Conference

The first day kicked off with the “Human (In) Nature Conference,” setting the stage for profound ecological reflections. Key highlights from the day included:

  • A thought-provoking plenary titled “The Rights of Nature – Rethinking Our Place in the World,” featuring insights from global experts like international environmental lawyer Jessica den Outer and Earth jurisprudence advocate Cormac Cullinan.
  • Immersive sessions exploring Intuitive Interspecies Communication, regenerative conservation, and an impactful “Slow Disaster Project Installation”.
  • Hands-on masterclasses covering practical, nature-aligned topics such as sustainable beekeeping and “Biomimicry in Action”.
  • A deeply moving musical performance by the Lynedoch Valley Children’s Choir, representing youth from local and farm-worker families.

Day 2: South Africa Circularity Summit

The second day transitioned into the “South Africa Circularity Summit,” moving the conversation toward actionable, nature-positive business strategies. Highlights from Day 2 featured:

  • A plenary on “Circular Systems for a Regenerative Future,” exploring how agri-food systems and material design can serve as a circular business case.
  • The “SOLVE Challenge Circular Innovation Challenge 2025,” hosted by V&A Waterfront, which showcased South Africa’s most forward-thinking circular economy solutions.
  • Focused afternoon sessions centered on how circularity creates new business models, sustainable sourcing, and redesigning for repair and refurbishment in the electronic sector.

A Thriving Expo of Innovations

Beyond the sessions, the Circular Expo allowed participants to connect with incredible, forward-thinking organisations. Exhibitors included Veld and Sea, who invited attendees to reconnect with nature through coastal foraging and regenerative practices, and Ywaste, a majority black-owned business that diverts over 800 tons of food waste from landfills every month. The expo also highlighted non-profits like Taking Care of Business (TCB), which empowers unemployed individuals, particularly women, by transforming waste into viable business opportunities.

Nature & Circularity Week 2025 was a powerful reminder of the innovations that are possible when businesses, communities, and ecosystems work in harmony. We look forward to seeing how the seeds planted last year continue to grow into a more just, regenerative future!
