SUP Webinar Report
On 26th May 2020, Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB-Kenya) in partnership with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) held the Single Use Plastics webinar, which aimed to prepare players in the tourism, hospitality and MICE industries for the single-use plastic ban that would take effect of June 5th, and how to tackle the Single Use Plastics. The webinar was open to the public, with approximately 47 participants present for the 1hr 30 minutes’ session. During the interactive webinar, participants shared feedback, opinions, suggestions as well as concerns around the ban in Kenya, which will be highlighted later in the report.
Webinar Objectives
In a world with finite resources, economic growth can be sustained if materials and products are reused more than once. Preserving the value of materials is the aim of circular economy. This requires new production and sourcing systems and new business models, offering great opportunities for innovation and redesigning of products to eliminate waste by closing the loop. The webinar aimed toachieve the following objectives:
1. Raise awareness around the Single Use Plastic ban in protected areas.
2. Create linkages for sustainable alternatives in the market: Develop an alternatives directory
for sustainable suppliers.
3. Raise awareness on sustainable waste management systems across the whole value chain.
4. Look at the existing policies and the role of the Private sector on the implementation of the
ban.
