Circular Agriculture Roundtable & Network / expo event
The Circular Agriculture Trend Report Launch and Expo was collaborative effort by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Kenya. This event introduced the Circular Agriculture Brochure and facilitated enlightening discussions during the Roundtable on Alternative Animal Protein Feed. Targeting both Dutch and Kenyan stakeholders in regenerative agriculture, this initiative aimed to accelerate Kenya’s agricultural sector towards sustainability, resilience, and inclusivity.
The activities started with a (closed for invitees only) Roundtable Workshop on Alternative Animal Protein Feed, where participants delved into the transformative potential of circular and regenerative farming practices. Led by experts and industry leaders, discussions centered on elevating Kenya’s food security through sustainable protein-based animal feed solutions. The event highlighted the urgent need for adopting circular agriculture methods to mitigate climate change, enhance food quality, and improve overall food security.
During the Roundtable, key stakeholders collectively outlined a vision for a more sustainable agricultural sector and identified challenges and opportunities for growth. Participants proposed ambitious targets, including reaching 35,000 metric tons of alternative ingredients in Kenya by 2027. They emphasized the importance of increased investments in technology, policy development, awareness creation, and collaboration to achieve these goals.
Comments made:
“Agriculture brings us and businesses back to nature. We are part of the environment, and thinking that we are disconnected has caused an imbalance with nature. Our activities are driving the extinction of nature, but we can re-imagine and make the desired change.” – Karin Boomsma, Sustainable Inclusive Business Kenya Project Director
“We need to consider other alternatives for animal protein feed and make this a future model for agriculture. It is the only way to secure a sustainable future and this is the right time to make the needed changes to achieve circular agriculture in Kenya.” – Ms. Ingrid Korving, Netherlands Agricultural Counsellor for Kenya and Tanzania
“There is a need to work together in consortia, to better sustainable growth in the sector and draw down the costs of animal proteins. Regional scaling calls for all stakeholders (Public and Private) to come together and spearhead the discussion on improving the circular economy status in Kenya.” – Wouter Van Vliet, Director of Larive
Impact: brought over 100 people together in the regenerative Agriculture space (Kenyans & Dutch organisations), held very first collaborative roundtable on how to speed up progress in Kenya & East Africa on Alternative Animal Protein Feed, had 10 good practices features in the Brochure in the expo room, launched the brochure also in general media and featured the 5 documentaries made.
